Project: ClimateDataHub - A Marketplace to Access Climate Data
Summary:
It takes up to 6 months to get started working with data in the climate space. We have put together a web tool to help data scientists discover, upload, curate, download, and monetize datasets related to climate change. In this way, climate machine learning models can be built in days, as opposed to months to years.
Sustainable Development Goals:
No Poverty
Zero Hunger
Gender Equality
Good Health and Well-Being
Quality Education
Clean Water and Sanitation
Affordable and Clean Energy
Decent Work and Economic Growth
Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Reducing Inequality
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Responsible Consumption and Production
Climate Action
Life Below Water
Life on Land
Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Partnerships for the Goals
Skills & Resources Needed:
Domain experts that transact with climate data (buying/selling data) in energy, food/water, infrastructure/transportation, risk/resilience, nature/conservation, policy, health, finance/investment, commerce/manufacturing
Data scientists and computer scientists (to sign up as alpha users)
Datasets related to climate
Post-Capsule Goals:
Incubator Program
Accelerator Program
Entrepreneurial Program
Launching Your Own Startup
Project Motivation:
Our team became concerned about the climate crisis when Sumeet Sandhu, Cathy Chiba, and Jim Schwoebel met in June 2019. We all felt compelled as technologists to use our time to do more to reduce humanity's effect on the climate.
We have interviewed over 20 data scientists and every single one has mentioned it has been hard to access and download climate datasets. We believe we can solve this problem with our effort. We think this next project (ClimateDataHub) is our most significant yet and can truly move the needle on helping data scientists fight climate change.
