Project: Fortify Vertical Garden
Team Members:
Ashleigh Plasterer, Project Lead
Summary:
Fortify seeks to address the issues of the increasing use of land for agriculture and of the subsequent impact of food distribution on carbon dioxide emissions. In 2019, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change, released a Special Report on climate change, desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food security, and greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems. Specifically, the IPCC indicated that “the current geographic spread of the use of land, the large appropriation of multiple ecosystem services and the loss of biodiversity are unprecedented in human history.” Thus, Fortify looks to produce food using food technology, closer to the communities that desire them. Additionally, through an education platform for health and wellness, Fortify hopes to effect dietary change and reduce food waste.
Skills & Resources Needed:
Subject matter experts in fostering community connections or in agricultural practices
Early assistance in writing a business plan, business pitch, and forming a business
We need to identify additional team members with skills different than ours, such as a CFO for financial projecting, etc and social media managers for promoting the problem that we’re trying to solve and the solution we’re proposing.
Post-Capsule Goals:
Incubator Program
Accelerator Program
University Partnership or Collaboration
Project Motivation:
Triggered by the impact of COVID-19 on the food industry, we searched for a way that we could support the food industry supply chain with a greater purpose of doing our part to tackle climate change. The combination of producing and delivering food to the local communities while cultivating skills for community members create a win-win environment. Overall, Fortify focuses on bringing the food supply system back to the community with collaborative allies and flexible sales outlets.
